이 연구는 서울에 위치한 한 중학교의 입학생들이 고등학교에 진학하기까지 다년간의 현장조사와 부르디외의 이론에 대한 비판적인 탐구를 결합시켜 한국의 중등교육에서 나타나는 불평등의 차원을 중층적으로 조망한다. 한국의 중등교육이 직면한 문제를 학업성취나 입시경쟁에 치중하여 다루는 지배적 경향에 대한 비판적 관점을 바탕으로 이 논문은 ‘누가 어떻게 학력자본을 성취하는가’라는 익숙한 질문 대신 학력자본을 내기물로 하는 교육장에 ‘누가 어떻게 장의 구성원으로 참여하는가’를 질문한다. 인간을 장의 구성원으로 만드는 전제조건이자 장의 내기물을 향한 열망과 몰입을 뜻하는 일루지오에 초점을 둠으로써, 학교가 사실상 특정한 가족을 전제로 교육활동을 수행하는 한편 학생들을 실질적인 장의 구성원으로 만들어내는데 실패하는 현상을 살펴본다. 나아가 장의 구성원들을 평가하고 분류하는 체계로서 제도화된 교육체계를 상징폭력의 질서와 연결시켜 해석하면서, 부르디외 이론의 결정론적 경향을 상징폭력 이론의 핵심 개념인 ‘오인’을 중심으로 비판하는 한편 상징폭력의 ‘물화’된 질서에 대한 행위자의 ‘간파’에 주목해야 함을 주장한다.

This study, grounded in Bourdieu’s theory, addresses school failure and symbolic violence within South Korea's secondary education system. It critiques the prevailing tendency in discussions about Korean secondary education to overly focus on entrance examinations and private education, overlooking broader dimensions of inequality. Through an extensive field study at a middle school in Seoul, this research shifts focus from the acquisition of educational capital to the dynamics of gaining membership in a school. It emphasizes illusio as a critical condition for being recognized as a member of a field, highlighting how schools often fail to integrate students as active participants. The study also challenges traditional assumptions about the family’s role in secondary education. It examines the emergence of feelings of helplessness and anxiety among students, linking these emotions to broader educational structures. Furthermore, the paper critically assesses Bourdieu’s notion of misrecognition within the context of symbolic violence, elucidating how students develop cynicism and skepticism towards the illusio in the field of education. This analysis is achieved by connecting theoretical discussions on the penetration and reification within the context of symbolic violence.
